Civil War-era Christmas cartoons by Thomas Nast (probably the most famous, most politically significant American cartoonist ever). Apart from being the first to depict the Republican and Democratic parties as their respective animals, exposing Boss Tweed, and creating Uncle Sam, Nast also introduced the modern version of Santa Claus. His version of Santa has changed only minimally over the past 150 years.
Sadly, Santa still looks like a major creeper…
